Plaques
Wrangell Mariners’ Memorial, Inc was formed in March 2017 to raise funds to construct a memorial in Wrangell to remember those lost at sea and those who had a close connection with the water in the Wrangell area. It is our intention to facilitate the remembrance of many different groups of people, including but not limited to: commercial fishermen; maritime transportation workers; recreational boaters and Stikine River "runners"; those lost aboard the sailing vessel Star of Bengal; and the indigenous people population through time. This will be accomplished through construction of a memorial plaza and pavilion adjacent to Heritage Harbor that will include walls where plaques can be placed with names and where stories can be told.
Plaque applicants should assure that the mariner resided in Wrangell, or in an area close-by, with strong personal ties to the maritime industry and seafaring history of Wrangell. Wrangell Mariners' Memorial Board will not be able to consider residents of other communities (unless they worked out of Wrangell heavily, for example a fisherman from POW who commercial fished out of Wrangell Port each Summer for years), or applicants who did not have a deep tie to Wrangell as a mariner themselves.
