About WMM
Wrangell Community Members had been pursuing the idea of a Mariners’ Memorial for about 20 years. In 2005 and 2006, Wrangell High School Senior Project Students worked to identify a location and design for a memorial. These young men were crew who lost their captain to the sea in 2005. In 2009, the Port Commission was asked by community members to help finalize a location and design for a memorial to be constructed, which was completed.
The 2017 newly formed Wrangell Mariners’ Memorial Committee successfully pursued becoming a non-profit corporation with tax-exempt status, as well as worked hard to document community support, finalize plans, secure funding and start construction of the Wrangell Mariners’ Memorial.
Construction of the main memorial was completed in 2022, after a 2019 ground breaking, with the ribbon cutting ceremony occurring on September 22, 2022. Although work is ongoing, we consider the Wrangell Mariners' Memorial officially open on that day.
