Dave Hartung was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. After serving in the army for two years in Germany, Dave returned home, transformed a school bus into an RV - complete with woodstove and shower, and headed North to Wrangell, Alaska.
Dave deckhanded on the F/V Miss Susan in the late 1970's. Over the years, Dave captained several boats; F/V May One, F/V Alaska, and the boat he built himself, the 42 foot steel hull, power troller, F/V Sunny Bay, his pride and joy.
Dave lived on his float house in Wrangell for 50 years, and also had a home in Port Protection, Alaska. There wasn't much that Dave couldn't do; welding, boat building, fisherman, carpenter, mechanic, restoring old cars and on and on.
Dave had a little mischief in him and strong opinions about everything, but overall he was lighthearted, kooky and fun, lived a simple and relaxed life, and was a man of his word. "Blessed is the man who can find refuge in himself."
